Oxford, Mississippi

Something for Everyone

From tennis courts, golf courses, and swimming pools to hiking, hunting, and fishing, there’s no shortage of recreational activities and venues available to residents and visitors in Oxford and Lafayette County.

Oxford is home to two multi-screen cinemas, a skating rink, a bowling alley, fitness clubs, a skate park, several public parks, and baseball, softball, and soccer fields. Basketball and flag football programs are also among dozens of activities coordinated by the Oxford Park Commission. The University of Mississippi and two local high schools host a variety of athletic programs and spectator events, as well.

Lafayette County affords access to two lakes and various waterways suitable for a myriad of activities, including fishing, swimming, boating, windsurfing, and canoeing. Picnic and camping areas are also available, while hunting is allowed on private land.

The community features state-of-the-art playgrounds sprinkled throughout the area with abundant and exciting options for children of all ages.

In 2008, years of planning came to fruition with opening of FNC Park, home of Oxford-Lafayette Fields.  For years the City of Oxford and Lafayette County had planned to build an athletic facility that would meet the needs for the youth of the city and county. With a great sense of pride and cooperation, FNC Park is now open, and features:

  • Ample parking for over 950 cars.
  • Five (5) regulation size soccer fields (240’ x 360’). All fields will be lit and have sprinkler systems.
  • Eight (8) baseball fields ranging in size from 200’-280’ and three (3) 315’ softball fields, all fully equipped with lights, sub-surface drainage, and sprinkler systems.
  • Four (4) concession buildings conveniently located for easy access.
  • Three (3) softball fields.

This major new development is projected be one of the premier soccer, baseball, and softball facilities in Mississippi. FNC Park features over 75 acres of state-of-the-art soccer, baseball, and softball fields to handle city, county, and tournament participants.

In 2002, the City of Oxford began the Community Pathways Project with the formulation of a basic bicycle path plan for the community. The goal of the Pathways project is to diversify and increase transportation and recreation opportunities in Oxford by creating an interconnected grid of bike lanes, pedestrian sidewalks and multi-use paths.  Phase I of the project has been completed and is open for the public to enjoy.  For a new map from the City that features local points of interest, road bike routes, mountain bike trails, bike lanes and traffic information, go to http://www.oxfordms.net/boards/pathwaysindex.htm

In addition to this new pathway, The League of American Bicyclists recently designated Oxford a “Bicycle Friendly Community” at the Bronze level, the only community in the state with such designation.
